Ontario: The Ford government blocks the increase in the minimum wage set for 2019

The Ontario government says it wants to halt the planned increase on the minimum wage expected for next year.

Laurie Scott, the labor minister, said that the minimum wage will remain at $ 14 per hour instead of rising to $ 15 as expected by the previous liberal government, the minister also that the progressive conservative government is conducting consultations on the matter.

Premier Doug Ford has promised during the election campaign to eliminate the provincial income tax for anyone earning a minimum wage.

He had previously proposed to abolish the tax for those who take home less than $ 30,000 a year.

At the time, an independent economic analysis showed that low-income workers would have benefited more than a minimum wage higher than lower taxes, because the wage increase would bring more money than a tax cut would save them.

Scott said there will be some tax breaks for those earning less than $ 30,000 a year, but he said the government is still processing the timing for such measures.
